Medical Examiner Service - Extension to Community Deaths
You may be aware that we have been running a Medical Examiner service at QAH Portsmouth since November 2019, covering all deaths at PHUT. We have now been mandated to extend this scrutiny of deaths to the community with a target of April 2022. This is in line with the planned legislation to make the service a statutory obligation by the end of 2022. This is described in the recent letter from NHS England (attached).
We will start reviewing deaths at the Rowans Hospice on 1st July and are already in discussions with Solent and Southern Trusts. The plan is for a stepwise roll out of the service and as such I am keen to get in touch with a GP group in the Portsmouth area which would be willing to pilot a scheme. In addition, towards the end of this year I will be advertising for further Medical Examiners (we will ultimately need something like 10 doctors providing 40 hours of work) and would like to encourage applications from doctors working in Primary Care. Please contact me direct if you would like to be considered for the pilot.
